Russian Weather in 2011

Surprising as it may sound the weather in Russia now is extremely wet. As the winter snow begins to melt, the land becomes drenched with water. This makes it difficult to traverse the roads, while pedestrians may find walking hazardous as the splash-backs from cars can often soak the weary traveler. Of course after the scorching Russian summer of 2010 here's hoping that a cooler summer will be present in Russia in 2011.

Russian has always remained a fascinating place to travel, and as the spring begins to pass the thought of an enjoyable summer amongst the people drinking kvass (a malted cold drink importantly alcohol free) brings a smile to my face. Even now the kvass vendors are out, waiting by their tanks of kvass to sell to all the people.

Yet even the weather in Moscow differs from other parts of the country. For example the weather in St Petersburg features vast lake areas which influence the amount of moisture in the air.

Trolley buses are cheap and effective, unless there is a power shortage. Trolley buses you see run on an overhead electric network. Always make sure you have the right clothing, considering the temperature can change so quickly. Since the wet spring in Russia remains so strong, a careful eye will focus on how the weather changes in Russia.

Keep up-to-date with information based on the area you will travel too. Use local newspapers, television, and Internet weather updates to stay aware of any changes in the climate.

Traveling remains such an important way of seeing the world. Russia is a travelers paradise, although often hard-work. You'll find the weather truly amazing if you time it right.

Now as the rain melts huge blocks of ice crash through the rivers, smashing into the trees that patiently line the edges of the swollen rivers. The sheer amount of water traveling along even simple streams leads to a truly amazing site. Many people gather to watch the speeding water and ice travel downstream.

Children begin to play in local pools of water underneath the many birch trees. Considering the snow and ice have been with Russian for 5 months the total liquid pleasure from the melting snow is a child's imaginative playground.

Soon the warm spring will truly be in Russia and the buds of the Birch trees will emerge.

Yet the most important aspect after the snow melts is Subbotnik. Subbotnik refers to the period of general cleaning (subbotnik is named after the word for Saturday - subbota) of the streets and park-lands by all people. A place of work will receive a request from the administration to clean a surrounding area. Then off the workers go to clean the streets from cascading detritus after the long frozen winter. Beer bottles, Vodka bottles, discarded cigarettes, leaves, twigs and natural waster all get cleaned up by the people of Russia. Its a socialist, communal cleansing shared by the majority of citizens.

And so spring always gets off to a clean start in Russia.

As temperatures rise in the Russian spring so thunderous storms come in 2011 bringing some much needed rain. All plant life begins to spring to life with the rain water and hot temperatures. The spring in Russia looks like a paradise as all life rockets for the skies. Now off to drink kvass.

Very warm, well-written article! But you words that Subbotnik is shared by all citizens is not much true, unfortunately. It is tradition, it is still there, but quite few people follow it, spending their Saturday to take part in it..

Thanks Bobri Dobri - I agree I saw Subbotnik this year it's mostly the older generation an if peopl threw away less rubbish this tradition could pass peacefully into Russian history - thanks for your kind words John

Very true about 'people threw away less rubbish', however, I have very little hope it can happen some day...

Unfortunately I agree Bobri Dobri - it's not likely to happen soon in Russia or anywhere else in the world - John

Please explain Subbotnik. Researching the word I have found several definitions.

Subbotnik is when the citizens (mostly the older generation) clean and sweep the streets after the long winter. This removes all the rubbish, leaves, dust, etc.

It gets its name from the Russian word for "Saturday - Subbota". It's like volunteer work for the local community. Vladimir Lenin helped on the first Subbotnik in 1920 - so you can understand it has a strong Communist/Socialist leaning..

I would like to add, that traditionally there is one day (always Saturday), which is declared to be Subbotnik all over the country. And in every city and every city districts people gather together on that day to clean and remove garbage near their houses.
